Architecture has a long and distinguished tradition at Georgia Tech dating back to 1908. Today, besides its nationally-ranked professional program in architecture leading to the Master of Architecture degree, the School of Architecture offers an innovative undergraduate major in the discipline as well as both post-professional and research-oriented degree options at the graduate level. The Faculty prides itself on the quality of the design education it provides and is internationally active in areas of both practice and research.

Setting
Georgia Tech was established by an act of the Georgia legislature in 1885, and first admitted students in 1888. The School's creation signaled the beginning of the transformation of the agrarian South to an industrial economy. Today, Georgia Tech is one of 34 public institutions comprising the University System of Georgia and one of four major research universities in the state. Georgia Tech has established a tradition of excellence in technological research and education, is well known for its high academic standards, and stands among the top ranks of U.S. research universities. U.S. News & World Report consistently lists Georgia Tech among the 50 best universities in the nation with many of our individual programs ranking within the top 10. Located on a lush campus in midtown Atlanta, Georgia Tech is an urban university known for its focus on cutting-edge technologies and integration of academic and practical training. The Institute enrolls approximately 21,500 students in six colleges: Architecture; Computing; Engineering; Science; Management; and the Ivan Allen (Liberal Arts) College. The College of Architecture offers programs to approximately 1100 students.
School Philosophy
Georgia Tech's School of Architecture aims to forge an integrated and collaborative model of digital practice that will serve as an exemplar for other disciplines and redefine the culture of design. Our great cause in the years ahead must be the reform of architectural education to meet the challenges of a changing profession. The division of knowledge and expertise between the fields of architecture and engineering that served so well in the industrial age is now giving way to a new model of integrated knowledge in the digital age. The digital-age practice of architecture will rise on creative contact between design and research across fields and disciplinary boundaries. Digital age practice will require flexibility and an enterprising spirit that comes from engaging the world through community building and international exchange, from weighing the human benefits and environmental costs in all we do.

Programs
The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Architecture program at the Georgia Tech School of Architecture at Georgia Tech is a four-year, pre-professional architecture program that prepares students for entry to the two-year professional Master of Architecture degree program and/or for work or study in related fields. The B.S. in Architecture provides a general university education in the liberal arts, fine arts, technology, science and mathematics and a broad foundation in architectural studies with the design studio as a major focus of the curriculum. Students will also complete additional courses in architectural history, building structures and construction, visual communications, and electives in architectural theory, city planning, environment, computation, fine arts, etc. In our program, students have substantial opportunities to explore other disciplines and to participate in a variety of study abroad programs.
Graduate Studies in Architecture at Georgia Tech are comprised of five degree programs: the Master of Architecture (M.Arch), the Master of Science (M.S.), the Master of Science in Urban Design (MSUD), the dual M.Arch and Master of City & Regional Planning (MCRP), and the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.).
The M.Arch program is the professional degree program is STEM-accredited and provides students with a professional degree leading to a career in architecture or a related field. This program accommodates both a 2-year long curriculum for those students with a four-year, pre-professional degree in architecture and a 3.5-year curriculum for those students without a pre-professional degree in architecture.
M.S. in Architecture is a research-oriented post professional degree providing advanced specialized knowledge that enriches the practice of architecture. Students work in one of five concentrations: Advanced Production, Building Information and Systems, Design Computation, Design & Health, and High Performance Buildings. Each concentration has its own curriculum and requires students to produce a thesis or equivalent capstone project. The degree can be completed in twelve months.
The MSUD degree is a post-professional, STEM-designated degree for architects, landscape architects, city planners, and civil engineers who want to practice as urban designers in private firms or public agencies. The rich interdisciplinary curriculum with required courses in architecture, urban design and planning also provides opportunities to take courses in environmental engineering, real estate development and heritage preservation and to address urban design issues in a variety of contexts internationally. The degree requires a minimum of twelve months of study.
The dual M.Arch and MCRP provides an education for those who wish to engage directly in the process of city building. This program is intended to meet the needs of planning agencies, consultants, institutions, and architectural firms for graduates who can deal competently with the design complexities of urban areas.
The Ph.D. in Architecture program at Georgia Tech is one of the largest and most robust architecture Ph.D. programs in the United States with nearly 30 students in residence pursuing their Ph.D. coursework or completing their dissertation research. A diverse faculty of scholars and researchers advise students in one of four areas of specialization including: architecture, culture, and behavior; design technology; history, theory, and criticism; urbanism.
